Others may disagree, but my first reaction would be to give up the closet space and hang your clothes or store your items on open racks, covering the racks with a thick velour curtain; together this will make a nice diffuser/absorber...

Sounds like you may already have the necessary experience in working with plaster, but in case you're not used to making anything this large:
